Benefits of Use

  • Ensures safe and effective delivery of nutrients or medication to the stomach.

  • Radio-opaque line allows for clear radiographic confirmation of tube placement, enhancing patient safety.
  • Graduated markings ensure precise and consistent positioning.
  • Individually packed and sterile to prevent infection.

How to Use

  1. Preparation: Ensure the patient is in a comfortable, semi-Fowler's position. Gather all necessary equipment: stomach tube, lubricant, tape, syringe, stethoscope, and pH strips.
  2. Measurement: Measure the appropriate length for insertion by placing the tip of the tube at the tip of the patient's nose, extending it to the earlobe, and then down to the xiphoid process. Mark the measured length on the tube.
  3. Lubrication: Lubricate the distal end of the tube (approximately 10-15 cm) with a water-soluble lubricant to ease insertion.
  4. Insertion: Gently insert the tube through one of the patient's nostrils (or orally, if indicated), directing it downwards and backwards. Ask the patient to swallow or sip water as the tube advances into the esophagus to facilitate passage.
  5. Confirmation of Placement: Confirm tube placement using at least two methods:
    • Aspiration: Aspirate stomach contents and check the pH (typically <5.5 for gastric placement).
    • Air Insufflation: Inject 10-20ml of air into the tube while auscultating over the epigastrium for a gurgling sound.
    • X-ray: The most definitive method; an X-ray can confirm the exact position of the radio-opaque line.
  6. Securement: Once correct placement is confirmed, secure the tube to the patient's nose or cheek with appropriate medical tape or a tube fixation device.
  7. Documentation: Document the date and time of insertion, tube size, measured length of insertion, method of placement confirmation, and patient tolerance.

Caution & Warnings

  • For single use only. Do not re-sterilize or reuse.
  • Do not use if the sterile packaging is opened or damaged.
  • Use by trained medical professionals only. Improper insertion or placement can lead to serious complications such as aspiration pneumonia or injury.
  • Monitor patient closely for any signs of discomfort, respiratory distress, or tube dislodgement during and after insertion.
  • Ensure the tube is flushed regularly to prevent clogging, especially during continuous feeding or medication administration.
  • Discard responsibly after use, following hospital or local regulations for medical waste.
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
